Information about the Van Gogh Museum

Although Vincent van Gogh only lived in Amsterdam for a year, a large part of his oeuvre ended up in Amsterdam. After the death of Vincent his paintings came into the hands of his brother Theo. In the mid-twentieth century, Van Gogh’s work was housed in a foundation that was managed by with the municipality of Amsterdam.

Van Gogh’s paintings became increasingly popular over time and eventually it was decided to build a museum where all his work could be admired: such was the birth of the Van Gogh Museum. In 1973 the museum was officially opened, and up to the present date it houses the largest Van Gogh collection in the world.
