History of the Dam (Dam Square)
Amsterdam gets its name from the dam that was built in the Amstel River around 1170. This dam was crucial in managing the water flow and protecting the early settlements from flooding. As the area around the dam expanded, it gradually became the heart of the city, with Dam Square (or simply “the Dam”) emerging as a central point for commerce, trade, and public gatherings.
In the Middle Ages, the Dam was not just a marketplace but also a hub for political and social events. As Amsterdam grew in wealth and prominence during the Dutch Golden Age, the square became even more significant, symbolizing the city’s economic power and importance.
Over time, several important structures were erected around the square, further cementing its place as the focal point of Amsterdam. One of the most iconic buildings is the Royal Palace (Paleis op de Dam), originally built in the 17th century as the Town Hall before becoming the royal residence. The New Church (Nieuwe Kerk), dating back to the 15th century, is another historical building located on the square. It has long been used for royal ceremonies, including coronations and weddings.
In modern times, Dam Square is a vibrant place where history meets contemporary life. In addition to its historic landmarks, the square features cultural attractions like Madame Tussauds, the wax museum, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not!. Visitors can also enjoy shopping at De Bijenkorf, a high-end department store founded in 1870. (Read more on wikipedia)
